An original play, told by 20 actors with energy and humour, A Cornish Conviction is the astonishing true story of a Cornish heroine, Mary Bryant who triumphed against amazing odds.

Mary was an 18th Century girl from Fowey. She committed highway robbery and was transported in the first convict fleet to Australia. After enduring many adventures, she, her husband and two small children and a small group of convicts, were the only people to successfully escape, thanks in a large part to Mary’s navigational skills. After a terrifying journey in a small boat, they arrived in Timor. Their identity was eventually discovered, and they were sent back to England.

James Boswell became interested in Mary’s case and defended her in court. She was pardoned in 1793 and returned to Fowey.
