Would you like to be involved in a Minack production?

The Minack Youth Theatre offers fun and creative activities for young people throughout the year. Signing up workshops are held annually and these take the form of a free hour long theatre skills workshop. All children who come along to these in January are then invited to at least two events during the year.

In 2016 and 2017 these have been ‘Play in a Day’ events where groups of children worked with a professional team to create productions such as ‘The Voyages of Odysseus’ and ‘Peter Pan’.

Out of the signing up workshops a cast of children are selected to take part in a professional production on the Minack stage at Easter.

Other opportunities to take part in productions at the Minack are also periodically offered to members of the Minack Youth Theatre. In 2016, 10 members joined the cast of Newport Playgoers’ ‘Titfield Thunderbolt‘.

Involvement in all Minack Youth Theatre events is free of charge.

“We were overawed and humbled by the local interest in a youth theatre group here at the Minack, said Director Zoe Curnow, “ Over 100 talented local primary school children from across west Cornwall came along to sign up in 2016 with members taking part in the inaugural Minack production of The Lighthouse Keeper’s Lunch at Easter, The Titfield Thunderbolt in July and two hugely successful ‘Play in a Day’ events where productions of The Voyages of Odysseus and Peter Pan were staged at the end of a single day of rehearsals”.

In 2017, members have performed three more ‘Plays in a Day’, plus 17 members featured in the critically acclaimed Minack production of Goodnight Mister Tom at Easter and a further 25 members joined with young people from the British Theatre Academy to perform in ‘The Best of British‘ concerts celebrating the 100th Birthday of the Legendary Dame Vera Lynn.

The Youth Theatre has grown out of the wider Minack education programme which offers a free workshop to every year 5 student in West Cornwall. This year, over 1000 young people have enjoyed the unique experience of performing on the Minack’s world famous stage.

There is no cost to join or attend the Minack Youth Theatre, all activities are free as the education strand is 100% funded by the Minack Trust.

“One of the Minack’s charitable objects has always been “to educate the public in the dramatic and operatic arts explained Zoe, ‘we have all seen the rise of people visiting Cornwall over the last few years. Our increased visitor numbers directly enable us to offer new opportunities and experiences to those who live in our community, which is a wonderful motivator! When planning ahead we often ask the question ‘ What would Rowena do’? I like to think that she would be proud of what we’ve achieved so far, but that she’d also suggest ways in which we can offer more!  So for 2017 we are offering MYT opportunities to young people aged 11-20 and are developing a number of exciting projects for 2018.’

The Minack also supports Seven Stones Theatre in Penzance, who annually bring a play to the Minack stage. If you would like more details of how to be involved in local theatre please ask for more information.
