Nikos Kazantzakis’ novel Zorba the Greek is a modern classic that has already been adapted for the stage as a musical and as a ballet. Central's show for this summer, however, will take a fresh look at the book itself and also take inspiration from Michael Cacoyannis’ famous 1964 film version (which starred Antony Quinn and Alan Bates). It is a story of self-discovery and infuriating friendships, exploring the conflict between rationality and spontaneity, book-learning and worldly happiness. Set on the island of Crete, it cries out for a presentation in the sea air above Porthcurno beach.
Following last year’s highly successful collaboration with Twisting Yarn for Life of Pi, Central have again sought out an innovative and exciting company to work with: they are delighted to be able to bring Cartoon de Salvo to the Minack for the first time. Their energetic blend of improvisation, live music and well-crafted storytelling, (The Observer celebrates "their unflagging buoyancy and imagination, humour and intelligence"), is a perfect fit for this theatre. Central’s students will get some new challenges from the gang of young theatrical mavericks, and so, we hope, will the Minack’s loyal following.
